Chevening Scholarship 2026: Complete Application Guide for Nigerians

Chevening is the UK government's flagship international scholarship. Every year, it funds outstanding individuals from around the world to study a one-year Masters programme at any UK university — fully funded.

Nigeria consistently produces one of the largest Chevening cohorts globally. That is the good news. The other side of that coin: Nigerian applicants are also among the most competitive in the world. A strong application is not optional — it is mandatory.

This guide walks you through every stage of the Chevening application process, with specific advice for Nigerian applicants.

What Chevening Covers

Chevening is genuinely fully funded. The award includes:

University tuition fees — paid directly to your university, no cap on fee level
Monthly living allowance — based on London or non-London location
Economy class return flights — from Nigeria to the UK and back
UK visa application fee — reimbursed
Arrival allowance — one-time payment on arrival
Homeward departure allowance — on completion

There is no contribution required from the scholar. You do not need savings, a bank statement, or a sponsor.

Who Is Eligible?

Nationality: Nigerian citizen (you can hold dual nationality, but Nigerian citizenship is required)

Academic: Undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK 2:1 (Second Class Upper). In Nigeria, this means a minimum of 2:1 from a Nigerian university, though a First Class strengthens your application significantly.

Work experience: Minimum 2 years of work experience by the time you start the scholarship (counted from your undergraduate graduation date, or from when you started working — whichever is later). This is a hard requirement, not a preference. Volunteer work, internships, and NYSC can count if they were full-time and structured.

Return commitment: You must commit to returning to Nigeria for at least two years after completing the scholarship. Chevening scholars are expected to become leaders and change-makers in their home countries — this is central to the programme's mission.

You cannot apply if: You are currently studying in the UK, have a Chevening scholarship currently, are a family member of a British Embassy employee, or have previously been a Chevening scholar.

Step 1: Choose Your Three Universities

Before you begin the online application, you must identify three UK university courses you want to apply to. These are submitted as part of your Chevening application.

Important rules:

All three must be eligible Masters programmes (full-time, one year, starting the October after your application)
They must be at three different UK universities
You must apply to all three universities directly (through each university's admissions portal) and have at least one conditional or unconditional offer before Chevening makes its final decision

How to choose:

Match the programme to your stated career goals in your essays — consistency matters
Include at least one top-ranked university (Russell Group) — it demonstrates ambition
Consider location (London vs. other cities affects living allowance and cost of living)

Step 2: The Four Essays

The essays are where most Nigerian applications succeed or fail. Chevening requires four essays, each with a word limit of approximately 500 words:

Essay 1: Leadership and Influence

Prompt: Describe a situation where you have demonstrated leadership and influenced others. What was the outcome?

What Chevening is looking for: Real examples of leadership — not a job title, but evidence that you have actually influenced people or outcomes. This could be leading a project at work, organising community action, founding something, or mentoring others.

Common Nigerian mistakes: Describing a job title without describing a specific leadership act. "As a manager, I led a team of five" tells them nothing. "I identified that our team's reporting process was creating a 3-day delay in decision-making. I proposed and implemented a new system that reduced reporting time to same-day" is what they want.

Essay 2: Networking

Prompt: Explain how you will use the Chevening network.

What they want to know: That you understand Chevening is not just a scholarship — it is a lifelong network of over 50,000 alumni in 160 countries. They want scholars who will actively use and contribute to this network.

Tip: Research specific Chevening events, alumni chapters, and programmes before writing this essay. Mention the Nigeria Chevening Alumni Association. Show you've done your homework.

Essay 3: Studying in the UK

Prompt: Why is it important for you to study in the UK specifically?

Do not write: "The UK has good universities." Every country does. This essay needs to explain why the UK specifically — for your field. Examples: specific research centres, access to particular industries, unique academic traditions, proximity to European institutions for your research area.

Essay 4: Career Plan

Prompt: Describe your career plan for the next ten years and how your chosen course contributes to achieving it.

The most important essay. Chevening funds people who will make an impact. The strongest essays show:

Where you are now (current role, skills, experience)
Where you want to be in 10 years (specific, credible, ambitious)
How your chosen UK Masters closes the gap between where you are and where you want to be
How Nigeria benefits from your development

Avoid: Vague plans ("I want to be a leader in my industry"). Be specific. Name organisations you want to work at. Describe policies you want to influence. Mention the problems you want to solve.

Step 3: References

You need two referees — people who can speak to your professional or academic achievements. At least one should be a professional referee (your current employer or supervisor).

Good referees:

Current or recent line manager / supervisor
Academic supervisor or lecturer who knows your work well
Mentor with professional standing

Poor referees:

Friends or family
Colleagues at the same level as you
People who only know you socially

Give your referees plenty of time — at least 4–6 weeks. Share your CV, your essays (once drafted), and your career goals with them so their reference speaks to the same themes your essays do.

Step 4: The Interview

Shortlisted applicants are invited to interview in Abuja (at the British High Commission) or Lagos. Interviews typically take place between March and May.

Format: Panel interview, approximately 30–45 minutes. Usually 3 interviewers.

The Most Common Reasons Nigerian Applications Fail

Generic essays — not specific enough about achievements, plans, or Nigeria
Work experience gap — not meeting the 2-year requirement or not documenting it properly
Mismatched course and career plan — choosing a course that does not logically connect to stated goals
Applying to only one university — Chevening requires three choices; applying to fewer limits your options
Late application — the portal closes sharply at the deadline; technical issues at the last minute are your problem, not Chevening's
